The Seven-Day Week and the Meanings of the Names of the Days

The Seven-Day Week and the Meanings of the Names of the Days
The Seven Day Week
The Naming of the Days
Sunday -- Sun's day
Monday -- Moon's day
Tuesday -- Tiu's day
Wednesday -- Woden's day
Thursday -- Thor's day
Friday -- Freya's day
Saturday -- Saturn's day

first -- the first visible crecent,
seventh -- the waxing half moon,
fourteenth -- the full moon,
nineteenth -- dedicated to an offended goddess,
twenty-first -- the waning half moon,
twenty-eigth -- the last visible crecent,
twenty-nineth -- the invisible moon, and
thirtieth (possibly) -- the invisible moon.

The major periods are seven days, 1/4 month, long. This seven-day period was later regularized and disassociated from the lunar month to become our seven-day week. The Naming of the Days The Greeks named the days week after the sun, the moon and the five known planets, which were in turn named after the gods Ares, Hermes, Zeus, Aphrodite, and Cronus. The Greeks called the days of the week the Theon hemerai "days of the Gods". The Romans substituted their equivalent gods for the Greek gods, Mars, Mercury, Jove (Jupiter), Venus, and Saturn. (The two pantheons are very similar.) The Germanic peoples generally substituted roughly similar gods for the Roman gods, Tiu (Twia), Woden, Thor, Freya (Fria), but did not substitute Saturn. Sunday -- Sun's day Middle English sone(n)day or sun(nen)day Old English sunnandæg "day of the sun" Germanic sunnon-dagaz "day of the sun" Latin dies solis "day of the sun" Ancient Greek hemera heli(o)u, "day of the sun" Monday -- Moon's day Middle English monday or mone(n)day Old English mon(an)dæg "day of the moon" Latin dies lunae "day of the moon" Ancient Greek hemera selenes "day of the moon" Tuesday -- Tiu's day Middle English tiwesday or tewesday Old English tiwesdæg "Tiw's (Tiu's) day" Latin dies Martis "day of Mars" Ancient Greek hemera Areos "day of Ares" Tiu (Twia) is the English/Germanic god of war and the sky. He is identified with the Norse god Tyr. Mars is the Roman god of war. Ares is the Greek god of war. Wednesday -- Woden's day Middle English wodnesday, wednesday, or wednesdai Old English wodnesdæg "Woden's day" Latin dies Mercurii "day of Mercury" Ancient Greek hemera Hermu "day of Hermes" Woden is the chief Anglo-Saxon/Teutonic god. Woden is the leader of the Wild Hunt. Woden is from wod "violently insane" + -en "headship". He is identified with the Norse Odin. Mercury is the Roman god of commerce, travel, theivery, eloquence and science. He is the messenger of the other gods. Hermes is the Greek god of commerce, invention, cunning, and theft. He is the messenger and herald of the other gods. He serves as patron of travelers and rogues, and as the conductor of the dead to Hades. Thursday -- Thor's day Middle English thur(e)sday Old English thursdæg Old Norse thorsdagr "Thor's day" Old English thunresdæg "thunder's day" Latin dies Jovis "day of Jupiter" Ancient Greek hemera Dios "day of Zeus". Thor is the Norse god of thunder. He is represented as riding a chariot drawn by goats and wielding the hammer Miölnir. He is the defender of the Aesir, destined to kill and be killed by the Midgard Serpent. Jupiter (Jove) is the supreme Roman god and patron of the Roman state. He is noted for creating thunder and lightning. Zeus is Greek god of the heavens and the supreme Greek god. Friday -- Freya's day Middle English fridai Old English frigedæg "Freya's day" composed of Frige (genetive singular of Freo) + dæg "day" (most likely) or composed of Frig "Frigg" + dæg "day" (least likely) Germanic frije-dagaz "Freya's (or Frigg's) day" Latin dies Veneris "Venus's day" Ancient Greek hemera Aphrodites "day of Aphrodite" Freo is identical with freo, meaning free. It is from the Germanic frijaz meaning "beloved, belonging to the loved ones, not in bondage, free". Freya (Fria) is the Teutonic goddess of love, beauty, and fecundity (prolific procreation). She is identified with the Norse god Freya. She is leader of the Valkyries and one of the Vanir. She is confused in Germany with Frigg. Frigg (Frigga) is the Teutonic goddess of clouds, the sky, and conjugal (married) love. She is identified with Frigg, the Norse goddess of love and the heavens and the wife of Odin. She is one of the Aesir. She is confused in Germany with Freya. Venus is the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite (Cytherea) is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Saturday -- Saturn's day Middle English saterday Old English sæter(nes)dæg "Saturn's day" Latin dies Saturni "day of Saturn" Ancient Greek hemera Khronu "day of Cronus" Saturn is the Roman and Italic god of agriculture and the consort of Ops. He is believed to have ruled the earth during an age of happiness and virtue. Cronus (Kronos, Cronos) is the Greek god (Titan) who ruled the universe until dethroned by his son Zeus. The Cure - Friday I'm in LOVE

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh, Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

I don't care if Mondays black
Tuesday, Wednesday - heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday, you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday - watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a sheik
Spinning round and round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Craving for lots of History....

Chivalry

The Origins of Chivalry

There is a common error in assuming that because chivalry and feudalism were contemporary for several centuries they were identical. In reality they had nothing in common. Feudalism was a successful social and economic system that required a class structure to discipline it, one that became hereditary. Chivalry was an ideal, and althought it had a simple class structure, membership was not hereditary.

Chivalry was disciplined by a code of conduct that was clearly understood although it was never clearly formulated. Examination now, in retrospect, allows it to be reduced to this series of commandments composed by Léon Gautier ~

1. Thou shalt believe all the Church teaches and shalt obey her commandments.
2. Thou shalt defend the Church.
3. Thou shalt respect all weaknesses and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them.
4. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy.
5. Thou shalt make war against the infidel without cessation and without mercy.
6. Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of God.
7. Thou shalt never lie, and shalt remain faithful to thy pledged word.
8. Thou shalt be generous, and give largesse to everyone.
9. Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

These commandments may be said to have evolved from two Charlemagnic sources around the end of the eighth century. The first, now described as Charlemagne's Code of Chivalry, listed the knight's duties as follows ~

To fear God and maintain His Church
To serve the liege lord in valour and faith
To protect the weak and defenceless
To give succour to widows and orphans
To refrain from the wanton giving of offence
To live by honour and for glory
To despise pecuniary reward
To fight for the welfare of all
To obey those placed in authority
To guard the honour of fellow knights
To eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit
To keep faith
At all times to speak the truth
To persevere to the end in any enterprise begun
To respect the honour of women
Never to refuse a challenge from an equal
Never to turn the back upon a foe.

The second, The Exhortation of 800 AD, was issued by Charlemagne in the year he became Emperor.

Love God Almighty with all your heart and all your powers
Love your neighbour as yourself
Give alms to the poor as ye are able
Entertain strangers
Visit the sick
Be merciful to prisoners
Do ill to no man, nor consent unto such as do, for the receiver is as bad as the thief
Forgive as ye hope to be forgiven
Redeem the captive
Help the oppressed
Defend the cause of the widow and orphan
Render righteous judgement
Do not consent to any wrong
Persevere not in wrath
Shun excess in eating and drinking
Be humble and kind
Serve your liege lord faithfully
Do not steal
Do not perjure yourself, nor let others do so
Envy, hatred and violence separate men from the Kingdom of God
Defend the Church and promote her cause.

Six centuries later, the Duke of Burgundy defined for the Order of the Golden Fleece the knight's twelve chivalric virtues as ~

faith, charity, justice, sagacity, prudence, temperance, resolution, truth, liberality, diligence, hope and valour

~ a list which is easier to remember and will be as valid in the 21st century as it was in the 14th.

Something Cute for The Eyes ...

The Ting Tings - We Walk

Lyrics

You never alter
You're always you
Everything's breaking
But I don't care
Smash the rest up
Burn it down
Put us in the corner
'cus we're into ideas

Take these edges
They're inside out
No one will notice
They're looking elsewhere
We can't be honest
We call it off
We got the choice if
it all goes wrong

We walk, we walk
We walk, we walk

You see the changes
In things that come
It's how you deal with it
When switching off
Make a decision
A precondition
We got the choice if
it all goes wrong

We walk, we walk
We walk, we walk

When nothing makes
you feel good
Then nothing makes
you feel good
